At PAVA World, there are numerous opportunities to be part of the association and connect with active members. One of the most traditional activities PAVA offers is our Korean buchaechum dance team. Every movement we perform is rooted in traditional Korean dance dating back to the mid-1900s. This dance holds cultural significance as a representation of empowerment, religion, and the spirits that stem from Korean beliefs.
The fans we use while dancing symbolize beauty and femininity, especially reflecting their origins. The mesmerizing effect created as we swirl our fans in synchronized motion tells a story. The girls on PAVA’s buchaechum team have learned the techniques, movements, and performance skills necessary for this art form. We work together as a team to master rhythmic sways and gentle spins in time with the music. PAVA‘s buchaechum team is known for our beautiful waves created by the girls and their fans, maintaining a fluid and elegant presentation.
Our traditional hanboks play a significant role in our performance. PAVA’s buchaechum hanboks are vibrant pink and soft yellow. These bright colors add additional layers of beauty to our performances. The yellow coat symbolizes hope and joy, while the vibrant pink represents warmth and love. The flowing skirts enhance the fluidity of our movements, allowing us to perform naturally as a cohesive unit.
The hairstyles we wear for each performance require time, effort, and precision. Many PAVA moms arrive early on performance days to help with the girls‘ hair. Our hair is coiled into a tight bun, secured with a hairnet and a binyeo, which is a jeweled hairpin that goes through the bun. Finally, we add a headdress adorned with pendants at the top of our heads, held in place with numerous pins. Embracing traditional Korean hairstyles while performing adds even more beauty to the buchaechum.
PAVA’s biggest performance is the annual Hollywood parade. The buchaechum team, along with the other dance teams at PAVA and the SamulNori team, performs together each year in Hollywood. As the buchaechum team is well-known and popular within PAVA, we truly stand out and receive enthusiastic applause and love from hundreds of audience members during our Hollywood performance.
In addition to the traditional Korean dance teams, PAVA also has Muyoung and Sohgo dance teams. Muyoung features long, colorful sleeves draped over the hands, creating beautiful flowing motions as we gently spin with our arms raised. Sohgo involves a wooden stick and a small platform held in one arm. The movements of our feet and hands, combined with striking the platform, add an extra flow to the music created by the SamulNori drum team. Both Muyoung and Sohgo are integral to traditional Korean dance, expanding the opportunities available through PAVA.
Collaborating with the girls to become a well-performing team is something we all cherish. Each season, we welcome new members and celebrate our achievements together. PAVA truly preserves the Korean tradition of buchaechum by consistently performing in new venues. People are introduced to this special tradition and come to appreciate its beauty as we put on a captivating show for them.
